Al-Imām Ibn Khuwayz Mindād al-Mālikī stated regarding Imām Mālik’s ʿAqīdah (belief/creed), “The people of desires, according to Mālik and all of his companions, were the people of Kalām (i.e. rhetorical argumentation and analogous reasoning, which they gave precedence to over the legislative texts). Accordingly, every person of Kalām according to Imam Mālik, was a person of desires and bidʿah (innovation) whether he was Ashʿarī or not and his giving testimony would never be accepted. This person would be shunned and disciplined due to his adoption of an innovation (in the religion) and if he persisted in such, he was to be legally mandated to repent…”
