The Warning of Ibn Zamanīn from Sitting with the People of Desires (and Bid’ah)

The Warning of Ibn Zamanīn from Sitting with the People of Desires (and Bid’ah)

Muhammad ibn ‘Abdillah al Andulusī رحمه الله known as Ibn Abī Zamanīn mentioned in his book Usūl As sunnah the position of Ahl Sunnah regarding the people of bid’ah under the heading, “The Chapter of the Prohibition of Sitting with the People of Desires (and what Ahl Sunnah described them with).”

He mentions, “Ahl Sunnah continue to disparage the people of misguided desires, and they prohibit sitting/gathering with them just as they warn the people due to the fear of their fitnah/calamities. They inform the people of their reality and do not consider this to be backbiting nor slandering them.”

Sheikh Abdullah al Bukhārī حفظه الله mentions in his commentary, “This is the correct methodology and the astute position which was the methodology traversed by the imams of guidance who are beacons of light in the face of darkness (of misguidance, etc.). They advised for the sake of Allah, His Messenger, and His Book, and they advised the leaders of the Muslims and the general Muslim populace.
From their advice, is the severe warning and the stern prohibition from sitting with the people of desires and bid’ah. To such an extent -may Allah have mercy upon them – that they did not neglect writing this matter and advice in the books they authored explaining the aqīdah of Ahl as sunnah wal Jamā’ah [1].”

Also, al ‘Allāmah Zaid ibn Muhammad al Madkhalī رحمه الله mentioned in his explanation of this chapter of Usūl Sunnah,
“The author رحمه الله mentioned 18 narrations in this chapter warning from sitting with the people of desires in the general sense and specifically with the Khawāri, al Qadariyah, and the Murji’ah due to the resultant evil being near to them brings about which does away with the light of knowledge and the sunnah.
Likewise, due to the fact that the person who sits with them may be misguided from the straight path and thus incline towards deviant methodologies which the shayātīn call to and who throw the person who answers their call into the abyss of the hellfire.

Read, dear Muslim, the texts and narrations which this chapter consists of, and the warning from desires and its people will be clear to you. This is due to the fact that desires and their people are the enemies of the sunnah and the people of the sunnah. Allah punishes the people of desires by blackening their faces (due to the darkness of misguidance, etc.) on the Day when certain faces will be made radiant with light and others darkened as some of the scholars of tafsir mentioned that the faces of Ahl as Sunnah will be made radiant, and the faces of Ahl al Bid’ah will be blackened. Thus, refer back to the narrations in this chapter and the meanings that they substantiate and ask your Lord for success in adhering to the sunnah and loving its people. Ask Him, may He be exalted, to distance you from the evils of desires and the evils of its people. Act upon the reasons for such being certain of Him answering your supplication [2]”.
